EL ELYON – God Most High
FOUNDATION SCRIPTURE FOR OUR 21 DAY JOURNEY: “It is of the LORD’s [YAHWEH’s] mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” (Lam. 3:22-23)
EL ELYON is the most high, sovereign God of the universe. In Him, we can put our complete trust. “Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord [Adonay]; neither are there any works like unto they works” (Ps 86:8). In the first reference to this name of God, King Melchizedek of Salem blessed the patriarch of Israel three times following the miraculous rescue of Lot. With only 318 men and the miracle victory wrought by the hand of EL ELYON, Abraham “brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people” (Gen. 14:16).
King David also recognized God’s dominion in the affairs of men and referred to Him throughout the Psalms as EL ELYON. God Most High is full of mercy, steadfast in covenant love, and eternally faithful. David’s life was preserved by His hand, and his kingship was marked by submissive love to His sovereign LORD. Though he made mistakes, David is remembered as “a man after God’s own heart” (Acts 13:22). But in Babylon, King Nebuchadnezzar failed to grasp that all “things were made by Him . . . and for Him” (Col. 1:16). Being filled with pride, it took 7 years of insanity for Nebuchadnezzar to recognize God’s ultimate control. Being reduced to a madman, he finally “blessed the Most High [Illa-ah], (the Aramaic equivalent to EL ELYON), and declared “I praised and honoured him that liveth forever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation” (Dan. 4:34).
May we follow the examples of Melchizedek, Abraham, and David acknowledging our dependence upon EL ELYON, and let us repent quickly when we make anything or anyone “the most high” in our life. When He is seated as EL ELYON, sovereign LORD on the throne of our hearts, we will reap the fruit of covenant blessings and love. The psalmist declared so perfectly, “I will cry unto God most high [ELOHIM ELYON]; unto God [EL] that performeth all things for me” (Ps. 57:2). The Redeemer of Israel is always faithful to His covenant!

Genesis 14: 18-19 “And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine; and he was the priest of the most high God [EL ELYON]. And he blessed him, and said Blessed be Abram of the most high God [EL ELYON] possessor of heaven and earth: And blessed be the most high God [EL ELYON], which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.”
Psalm 46:1-4 “God [ELOHIM] is our refuge [Machseh] and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God [ELOHIM], the holy place of the tabernacles of the Most High [ELYON]”.
Psalm 78:35 “And they remembered that God [ELOHIM] was their rock, and the High God [EL ELYON] their redeemer.”
